Adding a tanning shelf to a pool.

Fort Worth home values have gone up 8.9% over the past year and are predicted to rise another 6.2% over the next year. This rise in value gives opportunity to turn some of that accrued escrow into funding for renovating your backyard! That beloved swimming pool from 1994 may need a new fresh look.

A tanning shelf or tanning ledge is the perfect feature to add to an existing swimming pool while under renovation.

A tanning shelf is an area inside the pool perimeter that sits just about 6-8" below water. The area is larger than your entry steps, usually running about 5-6' in length and width, commonly featuring a bubbler or umbrella.

Being one of the most prevalent add-ons to a pool design, the function of a tanning shelf stretches from child's play to adult relaxation. The family dog even appreciates a cool place to escape the Texas heat.

Construction of adding a tanning shelf -

It is ideal to add this area to an existing swimming pool while the pool is already under renovation.

The tanning shelf is typically added to the pool as an extension, increasing the size of the pool. In order to do this, the crew must first demo the beam. The swimming pool beam is the 12-18" pool wall that runs the outline of the pool.

Once the area is excavated, the crew will begin installing the plumbing and steel.

As the plumbing and steel is set, new concrete is shot.

The renovation can now continue as if the tanning shelf was always there, finishing out the coping, tile, and plaster.
